Why do socks and shoes have different sizing?..one of those weird garment industry things....when I set out to find out about shoe sizes, I was surprised to find that across the industry there is not an overall accepted standard....so, I gathered up numbers from around the world, averaged them, and came up with this chart of US sizes. I think it is a little more accurate than some, because it didn't originate from one single company, regardless, I hope it is useful, it can also be found in  Sock Options for Machine Knitters    Socks are better snug than loose, but too snug and they will wear out quicker....A Goldilocks phenomena!
